Mumbai Daal( Lentil Soup)

This daal and plain white rice is soul-food for us. Brings back tons of memories, when mom use to make this for dinner and we ate it right after finishing up the homework 😊 Yellow lentil with simple seasoning and tons of flavor.
Legumes such as daal are an excellent source of nutrients, plant protein and dietary fiber. In short, this dish is nutritionally similar to poultry, meat or fish but cutting down fat and cholesterol part. What a win-win…

Ingredients:
1 c yellow lentil – washed
2 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
½ tsp caraway seeds
1 pinch asafetida
5-6 curry leaves(optional)
1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
2-3 green chilies/ 1 alapeno pepper (slit in middle)
1 medium sized chopped tomato
½ tsp Turmeric powder
1 tsp salt
Small piece of jaggery or pinch of brown sugar
Cilantro to garnish
2-3 cups water
